Description
CAT MICROGRID SOLAR
Keep your industries producing, communities developing, and people connected. Caterpillar is at the forefront of the energy transition, integrating renewable power with smart energy storage and conventional diesel or gas fuelled power generation.
The Cat Microgrid system, which contains both photovoltaic solar modules and energy storage, provides:
- Increased energy efficiency with no reliance on the grid and optimal total cost of ownership.
- Efficient power that can be produced where and when its needed without transmission lines and transformer losses.
- High performance, scalable system designed and built using standardized building blocks that are easy and quick to install even in challenging environments.
Why the time is now?
Cost-effective electric power has been a challenge for industrial and commercial installations. Not all, are benefitted with strong grids. THIN FILM MODULES vs STANDARD SILICON MODULES
Land Use Advantage
As a result of higher efficiency, Cat modules offer higher power density with comparable land use when compared to typical c-Si modules, resulting in more installed capacity per square meter.
Specific Energy Yield Advantage
Thin-film high-efficiency modules have a proven specific yield advantage to deliver more usable energy per nameplate watt than conventional c-Si modules. Specific annual energy yield captures operating data over a year of module performance during varying real-world conditions where temperature, sunlight intensity, and solar spectrum all change throughout the days and seasons.
Specific energy yield = TOTAL ENERGY (MWh) PRODUCED / INSTALLED NAMEPLATE CAPACITY (MWp)
THIN FILM ADVANTAGE
Higher Energy Production in Hot Conditions
All PV modules produce less power than their nameplate as temperature rises above their labeled 250C standard test condition. In hot climates, module operating temperatures will exceed 250C for as much as 90% of generating hours. With a lower temperature coefficient of power, Cat modules produce more energy than c Si modules.
The thin-film CdTe module temperature co-efficient is 0.34%/0C, compared to ~ 0.45%/0C for c-Si modules. For Example, on a 40 0C day, a thin film module would reach 65 0C operating temperature. In such conditions, the thin-film module produce up to 5% more power than c-Si modules on average. Over a year in hot climate conditions, this high-temperature advantage adds up to 2% more annual energy than c-Si modules.
Up To 11.2% Energy Density Advantage
Given the same land area an equivalent module ground coverage ratio, thin-film CdTe modules produce more annual energy from the same land area as m-Si.
STANDARD SILICON MODULES
Whereas Silicon solar cells are more efficient as compared to thin-film cells, hence allowing you to fit more watts of capacity per square meter. In addition, silicon solar cells have a well-established supply chain thanks to their market dominance – easier to get in touch with providers and getting technical support. But a disadvantage of silicon solar cells compared with thin-film is being more susceptible to temperature increases. Assuming you have two solar arrays, one with each type of module, you lose more watts of output per °C with the silicon solar panels. That’s where thin-film solar cells serve there purpose well.
